Lockpicking Check Sequence
This module will import all characters with thief skills. The character with the highest Lockpicking skill will be the default, unless you choose otherwise. Select a thief and either use the pre-rolled percentage or roll your own. You also indicate if there is a trap or not.
The module will tell you if the tools break due to being low on uses. If they do, the process ends there. The thief can try again if they have other tools. If the tools do not break, the module will tell you if the trap was found and subsequently disarmed (if there is one). Finally, it will do a check to see if the lockpick was successful.
Breaking Thief Tools
A thief is entitled to only one chance at picking a lock according to the DMG. A little homebrew magic here imbues Thief Tools with 100 uses. Each time an attempt is made at picking a lock, one use is deducted. Once the number of Uses falls below 50, the system will start doing a breakage check on each attempt at picking a lock. The Thief Tools Chance to Break table indicates the chances for the tools to break based upon the number of uses left. If they break, the tools will be deleted from the character’s inventory and the lockpicking process will cancel. The thief is entitled to another chance if they have another set of tools.
| Uses Remaining | Break Percentage |
|---|---|
| 41 – 50 | 1% |
| 31 – 40 | 2% |
| 21 – 30 | 3% |
| 11 – 20 | 4% |
| 5 – 10 | 5% |
| 1 – 5 | 10% |
| 0 | 100% |
Triggering a Trap
If the DM indicates there is a trap on this particular lock, rolls will be made for Finding the trap and subsequently Disarming the trap. If either fails, the lockpicking process will again cancel and the thief suffers the consequences of triggering the trap.
Picking the Lock
If the thief successfully Finds the trap and Disarms it, or if there is no trap, a final roll will now be made to see if the lock is successfully picked. If it is not, the DMG says no other attempts may be made by this character until the character gains a new level. The lock is beyond his or her current level of competence.
